Reference Type: Direct Quotation
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment
Significance: Paul quotes Isaiah's second Servant Song (49:1-13), where God promises to answer and help the Servant during "a time of favor" and "day of salvation." Paul declares this eschatological moment has arrived - "now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation." Paul identifies his apostolic ministry with the Suffering Servant's mission to be "a light to the nations," bringing salvation to Gentiles. This is realized eschatology - Isaiah's prophesied restoration from exile is happening through Christ and apostolic proclamation. Paul's subsequent catalog of hardships (6:4-10) mirrors the Servant's afflictions, yet his ministry brings life despite suffering, fulfilling Isaiah 49's promise that the Servant would see offspring and prolong days.
