Significance: Paul alludes to Jeremiah 1:5 in Galatians 1:15 — "He who had set me apart from my mother's womb" (ho aphorisas me ek koilias mētros mou) — deliberately modeling his apostolic calling on the prophetic commissioning of Jeremiah, who was "consecrated" (hiqdashtika) and "appointed a prophet to the nations" before birth. The verbal parallel is striking: both texts emphasize prenatal divine selection (aphorisas/hiqdashtika) and a mission to the nations. Paul's language of being "set apart from birth" positions his Gentile apostleship as continuous with the OT prophetic office, countering the Judaizers' challenge to his authority. The Jeremiah allusion is particularly apt because Jeremiah, like Paul, faced opposition from the religious establishment while proclaiming God's new covenant work (Jer 31:31-34). Additionally, Jeremiah's calling "to the nations" (goyim, Jer 1:5) foreshadows Paul's commission to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. Paul's self-understanding as a prophetic figure in the line of Jeremiah undergirds his claim to independent apostolic authority (Gal 1:1, 11-12).
