Significance: Paul's opening establishes the foundational eschatological perspective structuring the entire letter. The Galatians' error was fundamentally a failure to understand redemptive history—they attempted to import elements from the old age (circumcision, law observance) into the new age inaugurated by Christ's death and resurrection. Paul's radical innovation is declaring that the age to come has already broken into the present through Christ's self-giving death, creating the "already/not yet" tension pervading Pauline eschatology. This sets up the entire argument: the Galatians cannot return to the old age (law, works, flesh) when Christ has delivered them into the new age (Spirit, faith, promise).
