Significance: Modern critics often ridicule Paul's argument—after all, both Hebrew zeraʿ and Greek sperma are collective singulars. But exegetical arguments based on linguistic details were common in rabbinic literature. Paul wasn't unaware of the collective sense—in 3:29 he affirms "you [plural!] are Abraham's seed." The collective meaning is fundamental to Paul's argument. Perhaps Paul's readers and even Judaizing opponents (who acknowledged Jesus as Messiah) would have readily acknowledged this identification between Abraham's seed and Christ. Paul likely isn't proving anything controversial but bringing to the surface what his readers already know and accept. He mentions it because of its relevance to the general argument: "the law was added... until the seed should come" (3:19). The Galatians aspire to be in Abraham's fold, but that's true only of those in corporate union with the seed, Christ.
