Anchor Text: Gen 12:1-3 — The Abrahamic Blessing
Significance: Paul combines Genesis 12:3 (Abraham addressed directly) with Genesis 18:18 (which contains the crucial term ethnē, "nations"). Paul deliberately omits "of the earth," focusing attention on ta ethnē as non-Jewish nations, the Gentiles. Three features deserve attention: (1) Paul uniquely personifies Scripture, making it the subject of "announced the good news"—what Scripture says, God says; (2) the verb proeuangelizomai asserts fundamental continuity between Hebrew Scriptures and the gospel—the latter is the former's fulfillment; (3) Paul identifies the gospel specifically as containing the message that Gentiles are justified by faith. Paul viewed his justification doctrine not as innovation but as revelation of a secret kept hidden for long ages. This contrasts sharply with Paul's contemporaries: Paul highlights the promise's significance for Gentiles, while midrashic tradition doesn't focus on this element of the Abrahamic promise.
