NT Text: Ephesians 5:2
OT Source: Exodus 29:18
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Typology
Subject: Christ's self-offering fulfills the consecration burnt offering pattern
Explanation: Paul's ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας (sweet-smelling aroma) language connects Christ's sacrifice to the consecration burnt offering for Aaron and his sons in Exodus 29:18, which was רֵיחַ נִיחֹחַ לַיהוָה (a pleasing aroma to the LORD). This offering set apart the priesthood for service, making them acceptable to approach God on behalf of the people. Christ's self-offering performs the ultimate consecration—He sanctifies Himself (John 17:19) and His people, making them a royal priesthood with direct access to God. Where Aaron's consecration required external sacrifice and was temporary, Christ is both priest and offering, accomplishing eternal consecration through His own blood.
Christological Connection: Christ's fragrant self-sacrifice both consecrates His eternal priesthood and sanctifies believers as a kingdom of priests with access to God.
