NT Text: Ephesians 5:2
OT Source: Leviticus 1:9
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Typology
Subject: Christ's offering as the ultimate burnt offering that produces a fragrant aroma to God
Explanation: Paul's ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας language directly connects Christ's sacrificial death to the Levitical burnt offering (עֹלָה), which was wholly consumed on the altar as רֵיחַ נִיחֹחַ לַיהוָה (a pleasing aroma to the LORD). The burnt offering represented complete consecration and propitiation, with the entire animal given to God. Christ's self-offering fulfills this typology perfectly—He gave Himself completely, withholding nothing, and His sacrifice produces the ultimate divine acceptance. Where countless burnt offerings were required daily in the Levitical system, Christ's once-for-all offering accomplishes eternal propitiation and becomes the fragrant aroma that pleases God supremely.
Christological Connection: Christ is the perfect burnt offering whose complete self-consecration and substitutionary death eternally satisfies God's justice and produces divine pleasure.
