Significance: Paul's verbatim quotation of Job 13:16 LXX ("this will turn out for my deliverance") reinterprets sōtēria not as physical release from prison but as spiritual vindication, as verse 20's "whether through life or through death" makes clear. In Job's original context, he declares confidence that despite suffering and accusations, his relationship with God will vindicate him—not deliverance from physical suffering but ultimate vindication before God. Paul appropriates this to express confidence that his present adversity will result in his spiritual vindication and Christ's magnification, whether he lives or dies. The allusion connects Paul's experience with Job's archetypal suffering: both face adversity while maintaining faith in God's ultimate vindication, both speak of "salvation" transcending immediate circumstances. This reinforces Paul's central argument: what matters is not circumstances but Christ's exaltation and Paul's perseverance in faith unto final salvation.
