Anchor Text: Dan 7:13-14 — The Son of Man Receiving Dominion

Significance: Paul's description of "the Lord himself" descending "from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God" evokes the cosmic theophanic imagery of Daniel 7:13 where "one like a son of man" comes "with the clouds of heaven" and is presented before the Ancient of Days to receive dominion. While Paul does not explicitly cite Daniel 7, the conceptual framework is unmistakable: a heavenly figure descends amid cosmic phenomena to exercise divine authority. The cloud imagery implicit in the "caught up in the clouds" of verse 17 further strengthens the Danielic connection. In Daniel 7, the Son of Man's coming results in the vindication of "the saints of the Most High" (7:18, 22, 27) who receive the kingdom — and in Paul's passage, Christ's descent results in the resurrection and vindication of the saints who "will be with the Lord forever" (4:17). The trumpets and angelic voices echo OT theophanic accompaniments (cf. Exod 19:16-19; Zech 9:14), which Daniel's vision also draws upon. Paul thus presents the parousia as the fulfillment of Daniel's vision: the Son of Man's heavenly enthronement, already accomplished in Christ's ascension, will be publicly manifested at his return when the dead in Christ are raised and the saints are gathered to share his reign.
