NT Text: Titus 2:14

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment
Significance: Paul's statement that Christ "gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness" (lytrōsētai hēmas apo pasēs anomias) closely echoes Psalm 130:8, "He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities" (hu yipdeh et-yisra'el mikkol avōnōtav). The TSK directly connects these texts. The verbal parallel is precise: "redeem from all iniquity" (Psalm) and "redeem from all lawlessness" (Paul). What the psalmist hoped for as future divine action, Paul declares accomplished in Christ's self-giving. The shift from "Israel" to "us" reflects the expansion of God's redemptive purposes to include Gentiles. This is a clear case of promise-fulfillment: the psalmist's confident expectation of total redemption from sin finds its realization in the atoning work of Christ.
