Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment
Anchor Text: Ezek 36-37 — A New Heart and Dry Bones
Significance: Paul's statement that God "poured out his Spirit on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior" (hou execheen eph' hēmas plousiōs) echoes Ezekiel 36:27, where God promises "I will put my Spirit within you" as the defining mark of the new covenant. The "pouring out" language also resonates with Joel 2:28-29 (already linked in the vault as Titus 3.6 to Joel 2.28-29). While Joel provides the explicit "pour out" vocabulary, Ezekiel 36:27 provides the covenantal framework: the Spirit is given to produce obedience from the heart, transforming God's people from within. Paul's "through Jesus Christ our Savior" specifies the mediator through whom Ezekiel's promise is fulfilled. The new covenant renewal Ezekiel envisioned — Spirit-indwelling producing genuine holiness — is what Paul declares accomplished in the believer's regeneration.
