Significance: Hebrews 11:3 declares: "By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God (rhēmati theou), so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible." This reflects the theology of Psalm 33:6, 9: "By the word of the LORD the heavens were made... He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm." Both texts affirm that the visible creation was produced by divine speech — the word of God as the instrument of creation. The connection to Genesis 1 is obvious ("And God said..."), but Psalm 33 specifically crystallizes the doctrine of creation by word that Hebrews invokes. The author of Hebrews makes this the first example of faith: understanding creation by word requires faith because the process is inherently invisible — "what is seen was not made out of things that are visible." This establishes the epistemological framework for all subsequent faith examples in Hebrews 11: faith is the capacity to trust in realities not yet seen (11:1), beginning with the foundational reality that God's word brings worlds into being.
