Hebrews 12:2 to Psalms 110:1

NT Text: Hebrews 12:2

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Analogy

Anchor Text: Psalm 110 — The Right-Hand Session and the Melchizedekian Priest

Significance: Fifth and final allusion to Psalm 110:1. Jesus' exaltation after enduring cross provides ultimate example and encouragement. "Way of the Son" (humiliation to exaltation) models perseverance for suffering community. The pattern is crucial—Jesus "for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame," then "sat down at the right hand of God's throne." This christological trajectory becomes the paradigm for believers: present suffering leads to future glory. Looking to Jesus provides both motivation (his example) and enablement (his present intercession from the throne) for endurance.

Hermeneutical Notes

Prosopological Shift: Auditor (David's anticipated Lord → the Son enthroned in joy, having endured the cross). Psalm 110:1 reread as the consummation of Christ's faith-journey: the Father's invitation "sit at my right hand" is the joy set before the Son which sustained him through the cross.
