Anchor Text: Hag 2:6 — Yet Once More I Will Shake
Significance: Hebrews 12:26b quotes Haggai 2:6: "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens" (eti hapax egō seisō ou monon tēn gēn alla kai ton ouranon). In its original post-exilic context, Haggai encouraged the returned remnant rebuilding the temple: though the second temple seemed insignificant compared to Solomon's (Hag 2:3), God promised a cosmic shaking that would fill this house with glory exceeding the former (2:7-9). The shaking was God's sovereign disruption of nations to accomplish his purposes. The author of Hebrews interprets "yet once more" eschatologically: the phrase indicates a final, definitive shaking that will remove everything shakable (the created order) so that "what cannot be shaken may remain" (12:27) — namely, the eternal kingdom believers are receiving (12:28). The progression moves from Sinai's localized earthquake (12:26a; Exod 19:18) through Haggai's prophetic promise to the eschatological consummation when heaven and earth will be transformed. This quotation grounds the already/not-yet framework: the decisive shaking has begun in Christ's first coming, but its completion awaits the parousia.
