Significance: Hebrews 2:13 places two quotations on the lips of Christ: "I will put My trust in Him" and "Behold, I and the children God has given Me." Both come from Isaiah 8:17-18, where Isaiah speaks of himself and his children as "signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty." In the original context, Isaiah trusts God amid national apostasy while his children serve as prophetic signs — Shear-Jashub ("a remnant will return") and Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz ("swift is the spoil"). The author of Hebrews applies these words to Christ through the principle of corporate solidarity: just as Isaiah stood with his children as a faithful remnant within unfaithful Israel, so Christ identifies with the "children God has given" him — his redeemed community. The typological escalation is significant: Isaiah was a sign-bearing prophet whose trust in God was exemplary; Christ is the faithful Son whose trust in the Father through suffering (2:10) and solidarity with his "brothers" (2:11-12) accomplishes not merely a prophetic sign but actual salvation. The passage establishes the incarnational logic of Hebrews 2: Christ shares in flesh and blood (2:14) precisely because the "children" he represents share in it.
