Anchor Text: Psalm 110 — The Right-Hand Session and the Melchizedekian Priest
Significance: Key text for chapters 5-7. Dominates argument in 7:1-28. God's oath establishes Christ's eternal, Melchizedekian priesthood (not Levitical). Superior priesthood based on appointment/oath, not ancestry. "Forever" demonstrates immortality. This psalm becomes the scriptural warrant for redefining priesthood outside Levitical lines—if the Davidic king is also a priest "after the order of Melchizedek," then the Levitical priesthood cannot be the final word on mediation between God and humanity. The oath formula ("The Lord has sworn") adds solemnity and irrevocability to the appointment.
Prosopological Shift: Auditor (the Davidic king-priest of Psalm 110:4 → the Son). God's oath constituting an eternal Melchizedekian priesthood becomes the Father's formal installation of the Son in priestly office, replacing the Aaronic line.
NT Use Pattern: Assimilated — Half of the Psalm 2:7 + Psalm 110:4 composite at Hebrews 5:5-6 — the priestly oath that completes the royal sonship declaration.
