Significance: James warns that "the wages you have withheld from the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts" (kyriou sabaōth). The title "Lord of Hosts" (kyrios sabaōth) is relatively rare in the NT and directly echoes Isaiah's frequent use of YHWH tseva'ot, particularly in the context of social justice oracles. Isaiah 5:9 declares "in my hearing the LORD of Hosts has declared" judgment against those who accumulate houses and land at the expense of the poor (5:8). James's use of this distinctive title in the context of economic exploitation deliberately invokes the prophetic tradition of divine judgment against oppressive wealth. The verbal echo signals that the God who judged Israel's wealthy oppressors through Isaiah will equally judge those who defraud laborers.
