Significance: Peter's description of the church as "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession" (laos eis peripoiēsin) draws primarily on Exodus 19:5-6 (already linked) but also echoes Deuteronomy 14:2, where Moses reiterates Israel's identity as "a people holy to the LORD your God" whom God "has chosen out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his treasured possession" (am segullah). The Deuteronomic repetition of the Sinai election language reinforces the covenantal basis for holiness: Israel's separation from surrounding peoples' practices (the immediate context of Deut 14) flows from their identity as God's chosen. Peter transfers this identity to the church, applying the Deuteronomic logic — distinctive holiness flowing from distinctive election — to the new covenant community composed of Jews and Gentiles.
