Anchor Text: Num 24:17 — Star Out of Jacob
Significance: Peter's reference to "the morning star" (phōsphoros) rising in the hearts of believers (2 Pet 1:19) echoes Balaam's oracle in Numbers 24:17, where "a star will come out of Jacob" (darakh kokhav miyya'aqov). This messianic prophecy, uttered by a pagan seer under divine compulsion, became one of the key messianic proof-texts in Judaism (cf. the Bar Kokhba revolt, "son of the star"). Peter applies the star imagery to the full dawning of Christ's glory in the believer's experience — the prophetic word already illumines like a lamp in a dark place, but the "morning star" will rise to bring full day. The allusion traces the longitudinal theme of messianic light from Balaam's oracle through the prophets (Isa 9:2; 60:1-3; Mal 4:2) to its fulfillment in Christ, who identifies himself as "the bright morning star" (Rev 22:16).
