2 Peter 3:13 to Isaiah 66:22

NT Text: 2 Peter 3:13

OT Source(s):

  • Isaiah 66:22 (As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me, so will your name and descendants endure)

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment

Significance: Peter declares "But in keeping with his promise, we are looking forward to new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells" (kainous ouranous kai gēn kainēn). This echoes Isaiah 66:22, the second of Isaiah's two "new heavens and new earth" texts (the first being Isa 65:17, already linked in the vault). While Isaiah 65:17 introduces the concept, Isaiah 66:22 emphasizes the permanence of the new creation — "they will endure before me" — and connects it to the enduring identity of God's people. Peter follows the Isaianic vision but adds the distinctive qualifier "in which righteousness dwells" (en hois dikaiosynē katoikei), specifying that the new creation will be characterized by the permanent dwelling of righteousness. This fulfillment of Isaianic prophecy through Peter demonstrates that the apostolic expectation of cosmic renewal was grounded in OT prophetic hope.
