Significance: John's declaration "God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all" draws on a rich Psalmic tradition: "The LORD is my light and my salvation" (Psalm 27:1), "In your light we see light" (Psalm 36:9), "The LORD God is a sun and shield" (Psalm 84:11). The existing IP (1:5 to Isaiah 60:19) captures the eschatological dimension, but the Psalmic background establishes the foundational OT theology of divine light as a metaphor for God's holiness, truth, and salvific presence. David's confession that Yahweh is his "light" provides the personal/covenantal dimension that complements Isaiah's cosmic/eschatological vision.
