Anchor Text: Lev 17:11 — Life Is in the Blood
Significance: Leviticus 17:11 establishes the theological foundation for blood atonement: "the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls." John applies this directly to Christ: "the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." The shift from כָּפַר (kāpar, "to cover/atone") to καθαρίζει (katharizei, "cleanses" — present tense, ongoing) reflects the move from type to fulfillment. Where Levitical blood covered guilt provisionally, Christ's blood cleanses comprehensively ("from all sin") and continually. The cleansing terminology also connects to Numbers 19's purification rituals (LXX καθαρός), suggesting John sees Christ's blood accomplishing what both atonement sacrifices and purification rites pointed toward. God's "I have given it to you" (Lev 17:11) finds its ultimate expression in the Father sending His Son as propitiation (1 John 4:10).
