Significance: The existing IP (1:9 to Psalm 32:5) captures the individual confession theme, but the Leviticus 26 passage provides the covenant dimension. In Leviticus 26:40-42, confession of iniquity triggers God's remembrance of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — covenant faithfulness, not mere sentiment, is the ground of forgiveness. John's language — "He is faithful (πιστός) and just (δίκαιος) to forgive" — echoes this covenantal logic: God forgives because He is faithful to His covenant promises. The Levitical "if they confess" (וְהִתְוַדּוּ) parallels John's ἐὰν ὁμολογῶμεν. Christ's atoning work is the basis upon which God's covenant faithfulness operates in the New Covenant.
