Anchor Text: Lev 16 — The Day of Atonement

Significance: John fuses two OT institutions in Christ: the atoning sacrifice and the intercessor. Leviticus established hilasmos (propitiation) through blood covering sin, averting divine wrath. The high priest on Yom Kippur both offered sacrifice and interceded for Israel. Isaiah's Suffering Servant unites these roles: making Himself a guilt offering (53:10) while interceding for transgressors (53:12). John applies this to Jesus's ongoing ministry - His death satisfied justice (propitiation); His risen life advocates before the Father. Zechariah's vision of Satan accusing Joshua and Yahweh defending him prefigures Christ's advocacy. The hermeneutical move transforms OT types into ongoing realities: Christ is not merely historical sacrifice but eternal intercessor. When believers sin, they have an advocate whose righteousness and propitiatory death secure continual cleansing. This grounds perseverance: Christians are kept not by sinlessness but by Christ's ceaseless representation before God.
