Significance: John's threefold description of worldly temptation — "the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life" — precisely maps to Eve's threefold response to the forbidden fruit: "good for food" (flesh), "a delight to the eyes" (eyes), "desired to make one wise" (pride). This structural parallel is one of the most widely recognized allusions in 1 John. John's "all that is in the world" recapitulates the original sin pattern in Eden, implying that worldly temptation is a repetition of the Fall. Christ overcomes this same threefold temptation in the wilderness (Matt 4:1-11/Luke 4:1-13), succeeding where Adam and Eve failed.
