NT Text: 1 John 2:25

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Echo
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment
Significance: John identifies "the promise He Himself made to us" as "eternal life" (ζωὴ αἰώνιος). Daniel 12:2 provides the OT's clearest articulation of this concept: "Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life (חַיֵּי עוֹלָם / LXX: ζωὴν αἰώνιον)." The LXX's ζωὴν αἰώνιον is the exact phrase John uses. Daniel's resurrection promise, given in the context of eschatological tribulation and vindication of the righteous, is the foundational OT text behind the NT's pervasive "eternal life" language. John presents eternal life not merely as future resurrection but as a present possession through knowing the Son (cf. John 17:3).
