Anchor Text: Jer 31:31-34 — The New Covenant
Significance: John sees new covenant realization in the Spirit's indwelling. Jeremiah promised internalized Torah - law written on hearts, eliminating need for external instruction because all will know Yahweh directly. Ezekiel specified the mechanism: God's Spirit indwelling His people, enabling obedience. John declares this accomplished: believers have the Spirit's anointing, providing internal authentication of truth. The hermeneutical move: what prophets promised eschatologically is now inaugurated reality. Christians possess Spirit-given discernment to recognize apostolic truth and reject heresy. This does not abolish teaching ministry (contra some misinterpretations) but establishes that true teaching resonates with the Spirit's internal witness. False teachers lack this anointing; their doctrine contradicts the Spirit's testimony about Jesus. This grounds assurance: believers are not dependent on elite teachers claiming secret knowledge. The Spirit illuminates apostolic tradition, confirming truth and exposing error. Spiritual anointing democratizes knowledge - all God's children know Him through the indwelling Spirit.
