Significance: John's declaration that "the darkness is fading and the true light is already shining" echoes Isaiah's messianic prophecy: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone." Isaiah 9:1-7 prophesies a great light breaking into Galilee's darkness, culminating in the birth of the child who bears divine titles (Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace). John's "true light already shining" is inaugurated-eschatology language — Isaiah's prophesied light has arrived in Christ, though the darkness has not yet fully passed.
