Significance: John sees new covenant fulfillment of Hosea's promise. Hosea 1-2 announces judgment: "Not my people" will become "children of the living God" through eschatological restoration. This reverses exile, transforming rebels into sons. Jeremiah similarly envisions restored Israel calling Yahweh "Father" - covenant intimacy exceeding Sinai. John declares this promise realized in Christ: those born of God through faith are genuinely God's children. The hermeneutical move: what prophets promised Israel finds transethnic fulfillment in the church. Believers - Jew and Gentile - are adopted into filial relationship through Christ. The marvel is unmerited divine love - God bestows sonship freely, not based on works but birth from above. This grounds Christian identity: not merely forgiven sinners but beloved children. The ethical implication (3:2-3): children resemble their Father. If God's nature is love and light and holiness, His children increasingly manifest these qualities. Future glorification (seeing Him as He is, becoming like Him) is trajectory already begun.
