Significance: John's test of genuine love — "If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?" — echoes Moses' command: "You shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him." The verbal parallel is striking: seeing a brother in need, the heart/hand response, the test of covenant love. John applies the Deuteronomic ethic to the New Covenant community, where the same standard of generous compassion defines authentic covenant membership. In both contexts, treatment of the needy brother reveals the true state of one's relationship with God.
