Significance: John's assurance — "by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us" — echoes Ezekiel's New Covenant prophecy: "I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes." Ezekiel's promise that God would place His Spirit within (בְּקִרְבְּכֶם) His people is fulfilled in John's declaration that the Spirit has been given (δέδωκεν) to believers. The indwelling Spirit is the proof of mutual abiding — God in the believer and the believer in God — which is precisely what Ezekiel promised.
