Connection Method(s): Typology

Significance: John's statement that "God sent His one and only Son into the world so that we might live through Him" and "sent His Son as the atoning sacrifice" echoes the Aqedah: "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love" (Gen 22:2). The monogenes/yachid connection is reinforced by Hebrews 11:17, which uses μονογενῆ explicitly for Isaac. God does what Abraham was willing to do — actually gives His only Son as a sacrifice. Abraham's hand was stayed; God's was not. The ram provided as substitute (Gen 22:13-14) anticipates the Son sent as propitiation. The Isaac-Christ typology is among the most well-established in biblical theology.
