NT Text: 1 John 5:14-15

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Echo
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment
Significance: John's prayer assurance — "If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us" — echoes Jeremiah's covenant promise to the exiles: "You will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart" (Jer 29:12-13). Both passages ground prayer confidence in God's covenant commitment to hear His people. Jeremiah's promise was given in the context of exile — a people far from God who nonetheless could approach Him — and John applies this same assurance to the New Covenant community. The condition "according to His will" parallels Jeremiah's "with all your heart" — both require alignment with God's purposes rather than selfish petition. What Jeremiah promised to the returning exiles, John declares fulfilled for those who are "in Him who is true."
