Connection Method(s): Analogy + Contrast
Anchor Text: Exod 20 — The Decalogue
Significance: The closing of 1 John mirrors the opening of the Decalogue. John's final declaration — "He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols" — directly echoes the first two commandments: "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image" (Exod 20:3-4). This creates a literary inclusio with the Sinai themes running throughout the letter. The same prohibition applies, but now grounded in knowing "the true God" through "His Son Jesus Christ" (5:20) rather than through Sinai theophany. The command to flee idols is as urgent in the New Covenant as at Sinai, yet the basis has shifted from law to gospel — from "I am the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt" to "the Son of God has come and has given us understanding."
