Anchor Text: Isa 49:1-6 — A Light to the Nations
Significance: Isaiah 49:2 is part of the second Servant Song, where the Servant of YHWH declares, "He made my mouth like a sharpened sword (hereb); in the shadow of His hand He hid me." The Servant's mouth is God's weapon — a sharp instrument of divine purpose, both proclamation and judgment. John's vision of the sharp two-edged sword (rhomphaia distomos oxeia) proceeding from Christ's mouth in Revelation 1:16 draws on this Servant imagery, identifying the glorified Christ as the fulfillment of Isaiah's Servant whose word accomplishes God's purposes. While Isaiah 11:4 emphasizes the royal-messianic dimension (the Branch's judicial word), Isaiah 49:2 adds the Servant dimension — the one who brings justice to the nations through his prophetic word. The convergence of these two Isaianic strands in one Christological image demonstrates how John synthesizes royal and servant trajectories in the person of the glorified Christ.
