NT Text: Revelation 1:13-16

OT Source(s):

  • Judges 5:31 ("May those who love Him be like the sun when it rises in its strength")

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Echo

Connection Method(s): Analogy + Longitudinal Theme

Significance: The Song of Deborah concludes with a prayer that those who love YHWH would be "like the sun when it rises in its strength" (ketseth hashemesh bigvurato), contrasting the fate of God's enemies who perish. John's description of Christ's face shining "like the sun at its brightest" (Rev 1:16) echoes this victorious imagery. In Judges 5:31 the simile describes the righteous who love God; in Revelation the sun-like radiance belongs to Christ Himself — the ultimate lover of God and victorious warrior. The escalation is significant: what was a blessing pronounced on faithful Israelites is now embodied in the glorified Messiah, who shares His victorious radiance with His people (cf. Matt 13:43, "the righteous will shine like the sun"). The theophanic brightness connects to other divine-glory passages (Exod 34:29-35; Matt 17:2) in the longitudinal theme of God's glory manifested in human form.
