Significance: John's "seven spirits before His throne" draws on Zechariah's vision of a golden lampstand (menorah) with seven lamps, interpreted by the angel as representing YHWH's Spirit: "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts" (Zech 4:6). The seven lamps in Zechariah symbolize God's all-seeing, all-empowering presence accomplishing His purposes through His Spirit rather than human power. John transposes this imagery into a heavenly throne-room setting, where the "seven spirits" represent the fullness and perfection of the Holy Spirit in His sevenfold operation. The number seven conveys completeness: the Spirit's work is comprehensive and omnipresent. Zechariah 4:10 explicitly connects the seven lamps with "the eyes of the LORD, which range throughout the whole earth," a link John develops further in Revelation 5:6.
