Anchor Text: Ezek 36-37 — A New Heart and Dry Bones
Significance: The resurrection of the two witnesses — "the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet" (pneuma zōēs ek tou theou eisēlthen en autois kai estēsan epi tous podas autōn) — closely echoes Ezekiel 37:10: "breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet" (vatavo' vahem haruah vayyihyu vayyā'amdu 'al raglēhem). Ezekiel's dry bones vision depicted the national restoration of Israel from exile — a corporate "resurrection" from the death of Babylonian captivity. John applies this resurrection imagery to the two witnesses whose death and vindication represent the church's testimony: killed by the beast yet raised by God's Spirit. The sequence of death-exposure-resurrection-ascension mirrors Christ's own pattern (crucifixion, burial, resurrection, ascension), suggesting that the faithful church participates in Christ's redemptive narrative. The "great fear" that falls on observers echoes Ezekiel 37:14's promise that the nations will know that YHWH has acted.
