Significance: Revelation 12:9 explicitly identifies the dragon as "that ancient serpent called the devil and Satan," establishing a direct link to Genesis 3:1 where the serpent first appears as "more crafty than any other beast." The dragon's "great fury" (thymon megan) knowing he has "only a short time" in Revelation 12:12 represents the cursed serpent's intensified hostility in the interval between Christ's victory (the curse's fulfillment beginning) and the final consummation. Genesis 3:14-15 pronounced both a curse on the serpent and a promise of the seed of the woman who would crush the serpent's head. Revelation 12 narrates the fulfillment of this protoevangelium: the woman has delivered the seed (the male child), the serpent has been cast down, and now rages against "the rest of her offspring" (Rev 12:17). The entire biblical narrative from Genesis 3 to Revelation 12 is the story of this serpent's war against the woman's seed — and his inevitable defeat.
