Significance: The dragon's tail sweeping "a third of the stars from the sky" echoes Daniel 8:10, where the "little horn" (identified with Antiochus IV Epiphanes) "grew up to the host of heaven and cast some of the host and some of the stars down to the earth and trampled on them." In Daniel, this described a human tyrant's assault on God's people (the "stars" representing the faithful). John transfers this imagery to the cosmic dragon, revealing that the power behind Antiochus — and behind every persecuting power — is Satan himself. The "stars" may represent angels who fell with Satan, or may continue Daniel's symbolism of God's people being attacked. The escalation from Daniel's earthly horn to Revelation's cosmic dragon reveals the heavenly dimension of the conflict that Daniel only partially unveiled. The "third" proportion connects to the trumpet judgments, suggesting Satan's influence is real but limited.
