Significance: The second beast (false prophet) performing "great signs to cause even fire from heaven to come down to earth" is a satanic parody of Elijah's Mount Carmel miracle (1 Kings 18:38-39), where fire from heaven consumed the sacrifice and proved YHWH's sovereignty over Baal. On Carmel, fire from heaven authenticated the true God against the false; in Revelation 13, the same sign is counterfeited to authenticate the false god (the beast). The irony is deliberate: the very sign that once exposed false worship is now co-opted by the false prophet to promote false worship. This inverts the Elijah tradition: instead of fire proving YHWH's uniqueness, it deceives the world into beast-worship. The allusion warns that signs and wonders alone cannot authenticate truth — even miraculous fire can serve deception. Readers must discern by the content of the message, not merely the impressiveness of the sign.
