Significance: The mark of the beast on "the right hand or on the forehead" (Rev 13:16) is a satanic inversion of the covenant sign commanded in Exodus 13:9, 16, where YHWH instructed Israel to keep the Passover observance as "a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead" — the basis for the later practice of wearing tefillin (phylacteries). In Exodus, the hand-and-forehead sign commemorated God's redemption and marked Israel's total loyalty to YHWH in thought (forehead) and deed (hand). The beast's mark parodies this: it demands total loyalty in thought and deed to the beast-system, and excludes non-conformists from economic life. The antithesis is sharp: God's sign liberates and commemorates redemption; the beast's mark enslaves and compels worship. Revelation 14:1 completes the contrast: the 144,000 bear the Lamb's name on their foreheads — the true covenant sign that opposes the beast's counterfeit.
