OT Source(s):

  • Isaiah 66:6 ("A voice from the temple ... rendering recompense")

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Analogy

Significance: Isaiah 66:6 announces, "A voice of uproar from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of YHWH rendering recompense to His enemies." Revelation 16:1 depicts "a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, 'Go, pour out on the earth the seven bowls of God's wrath.'" Both texts share the striking image of a divine voice issuing from the temple to pronounce judgment. In Isaiah, this occurs in the context of the eschatological restoration of Zion and the judgment of those who rejected YHWH's ways. In Revelation, the command initiates the final seven plagues. The verbal link — voice (qol / phōnē) from the temple (hekal / naos) commanding recompense — is precise. John reads Isaiah's prophetic vision as finding its ultimate enactment in the bowl judgments.
