Significance: Psalm 79 laments that the nations "poured out their blood like water" around Jerusalem with no one to bury them (v. 3) and asks, "How long, O Lord? ... Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations" (v. 10). Revelation 16:6 echoes this language precisely: "they have spilled the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them blood to drink, as they deserve." The poetic justice is exact — those who shed blood are made to drink blood. The Psalmist's cry for vindication, which remained unanswered in its historical context, receives its ultimate answer in the bowl judgments. This allusion connects the martyrs' cry in Revelation 6:10 with the Psalmic tradition of imprecation, showing that God's justice, though delayed, is certain and proportionate.
