Anchor Text: Psalm 2 — You Are My Son
Significance: Psalm 2:9 promises YHWH's anointed king: "You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery." Revelation 19:15 applies this directly to Christ's parousia: "He will rule them with an iron scepter." The LXX reading of Psalm 2:9 uses poimaneis ("shepherd/rule") rather than the MT's tero'em ("break"), and John follows the LXX, creating the paradox of shepherding-as-crushing — the Good Shepherd who is also the iron-sceptered ruler. This is the third time Revelation cites Psalm 2:9 (also 2:27 and 12:5), forming an inclusio across the book. The allusion in chapter 19 is the climactic application: what was promised to the Messiah in the Psalm, delegated to overcomers in chapter 2, and attributed to the male child in chapter 12, is now executed by the returning Christ.
