Revelation 20:9-10 to 2 Kings 1:10-14

NT Text: Revelation 20:9-10

OT Source(s):

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential Type, Backward-Looking) + Analogy

Significance: In 2 Kings 1:10-14, Elijah calls down fire from heaven that consumes two companies of fifty soldiers sent to arrest him — a dramatic demonstration of divine protection of the prophet and judgment on those who oppose God's servant. Revelation 20:9 describes fire coming "down from heaven" that consumes the armies of Gog and Magog assembled against the saints. The verbal parallel — "fire came down from heaven" (pur ek tou ouranou) — directly echoes the LXX of 2 Kings 1:10. The typological escalation is from localized protection of one prophet to universal protection of the entire people of God. The Elijah fire-from-heaven motif also appears in Revelation 13:13 (the false prophet's counterfeit) and Luke 9:54 (the disciples' misguided request), showing its ongoing significance in the canonical trajectory.
