Anchor Text: Isa 61:1-2 — The Spirit of the Lord
Significance: Isaiah 61:10 rejoices in salvation garments using bridal imagery: "as a bride adorns herself with her jewels." Revelation 21:2 describes the New Jerusalem "prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." The bridal-adornment metaphor connects city and bride: the New Jerusalem IS the bride, adorned for her wedding. This identification of city-as-bride is one of Revelation's most distinctive theological contributions, merging the prophetic traditions of Zion-as-woman (Isaiah 54, 62) with the bridal imagery of Isaiah 61. The city's precious stones (21:19-21) fulfill the "jewels" of Isaiah 61:10. Where Isaiah used bridal metaphor to describe salvation joy, John sees the literal descent of the glorified community. This allusion creates a second connection between Rev 21:2 and Isaiah 61:10 (complementing the Rev 19:7-8 allusion), showing that the same Isaianic text illuminates both the wedding and the city.
