Revelation 21:22 to Haggai 2:9

NT Text: Revelation 21:22

OT Source(s):

  • Haggai 2:9 ("The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house")

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Contrast

Significance: Haggai 2:9 promises that the glory of the rebuilt second temple "will be greater than the glory of the former house," and "in this place I will grant peace." Revelation 21:22 reveals the ultimate fulfillment in a surprising way: "I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple." The escalation transcends the category itself — the glory becomes so great that no physical temple can contain it. The contrast is deliberate: Haggai encouraged the rebuilders by promising greater glory; Revelation shows that the ultimate glory requires no building at all because God's presence fills everything. The peace Haggai promised in the temple becomes the universal shalom of the New Jerusalem where "there will be no more death or mourning" (21:4). The trajectory moves from tabernacle to Solomon's temple to the rebuilt temple to no temple at all.
