NT Text: Revelation 21:24-26

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Isaiah 60 describes Zion's future glory: "Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn" (v. 3); "the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come" (v. 5); "Your gates will always stand open, they will never be shut, day or night, so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations" (v. 11). Revelation 21:24-26 fulfills each element: "By its light the nations will walk, and into it the kings of the earth will bring their glory" (v. 24); "Its gates will never be shut" (v. 25); "the glory and honor of the nations" will be brought in (v. 26). The verbal parallels are extensive and systematic. The escalation is from the post-exilic restoration of earthly Jerusalem to the eternal New Jerusalem, where Gentile inclusion reaches its consummation.
