Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Isaiah 35:10 promises that the ransomed of YHWH "will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away." Revelation 21:4 declares the fulfillment: "there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away." Both texts describe the elimination of grief and the triumph of joy in the eschatological Zion. Isaiah's "sorrow and sighing will flee" (yagon wa'anachah nasu) corresponds to Revelation's "no more mourning or crying or pain." Isaiah 35 envisions the return from exile through a transformed wilderness; Revelation sees the ultimate arrival in the New Jerusalem. The allusion draws on a cluster of Isaianic promises (25:8; 35:10; 65:19) that converge in Revelation 21:4.
